Schedule a Consultation TodayAlton Williams says his weight problem came from an injury. “I have back problems as a result of some herniated discs in the lower back,” he explains. “I couldn’t move around a lot, and that caused the weight gain. Eventually, I went up to four hundred pounds. “I couldn’t walk very far,” adds Alton. “I couldn’t just take care of normal things, like bending over to tie my shoes. Even basic hygiene was a problem. It really affected me.”
Alton chose the gastric sleeve procedure, which was performed in May 2007. “The results are A number one,” he says. “It’s been a year since my procedure, and I’ve lost over 160 pounds! “It eliminated my blood pressure problem, the gout, no more swelling of the ankles, legs or feet … it’s just fabulous.” His life has changed dramatically as well. “I am excited,” emphasizes Alton. “The surgery has really changed my entire life. My self-esteem is off the charts now. I feel good about myself, and it helps me to encourage other people who may be going through problems such as myself.”
When I first met Amy, she was 100 pounds overweight and diabetic. Amy relates, “My triglycerides were up around six hundred.” Amy’s primary care doctor told her she had to get her life back on track and lose weight…or else. “I tried every diet under the sun” explains Amy, “and nothing worked for me. I couldn’t even exercise because I was so big. I was 41 years old and I weighed 227 pounds. I knew I had to lose weight or I was going to die.”
Amy came to one of my free seminars on weight loss surgery. After learning about the different weight loss options, she chose to have the LAP-BAND procedure. The LAP-BAND is a restrictive procedure that is very safe and can be done as a same day surgery. It requires no stapling, bypass, or intestinal re-routing.
The LAP-BAND works by restricting the amount of food a patient can eat, while allowing all the digestive processes to continue uninterrupted. It works by placing a silicon band around the top portion of the stomach, creating a small pouch that receives a limited amount of food. An inflatable balloon rests against the stomach on the inside wall of the band, and an external port allows this band to be filled with a saline solution to reduce or increase the size of the pouch.
The LAP-BAND is the least invasive of the bariatric procedures. There is no cutting, stapling, or intestinal re-routing, and the Band is both adjustable and reversible, and carries a low risk of malnutrition. Weight loss with the LAP-BAND is slow initially, but at two to three years a patient with a LAP-BAND loses as much as a gastric bypass patient.
“I chose the LAP-BAND procedure, which Dr. Beltre performed in 2006,” she relates. “I lost four pounds the first week after my surgery, and I averaged two pounds per week after that until I reached and then passed my goal weight! “I started noticing improvement in my health about four months after my surgery, and while I have changed the types of food I eat—I don’t eat much red meat or pasta—I find I am very comfortable with my reduced appetite. “Now that I have lost all that weight, I feel so much happier” says Amy. Amy no longer has to live with the threat of diabetes or high cholesterol. She is now more energetic and happier thanks to the LAP-BAND! Amy lost 80lbs in six months.
“I was heavy my entire life,” shares Susan Palma. “I’ve been wanting to lose weight for about 45 years.” Susan’s weight problem began to affect her life severely over time, as her joints simply could not handle the stress of the extra weight. “I injured myself about twenty years ago and snapped an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament], and I also had heel spurs,” she says. “At one point, I was over 300 pounds, and I couldn’t walk for about three years. I was literally living a handicapped life. “I finally got sick of it and had surgeries: fixing the heel spurs, fixing the knee. Every single doctor I saw for every problem said, “Well, you need to lose weight.”
Susan’s sleeve gastrectomy was an unqualified success. “I’ve had different kinds of surgeries in the past – sinuses, ear surgery, knee surgery, foot surgery – and this was relatively less painful than the other ones. I was amazed. “I’ve lost 120 pounds, and I love it!” marvels Susan. “It’s excellent. It’s a lifesaving procedure for me, as far as I’m concerned. “The world is open to me! Now that I’ve lost the weight, I’m amazed at how much it did work against me and how really all physical or medical problems I’ve had have pretty much gone away. “I’m thrilled to have had this surgery. I’m a different person inside and out,” she reflects. “My family sees a healthy mother, a healthy wife. I’m happy with it, and everybody in my family is happy with it, too.”
“Obesity runs in the family,” Karen Widajewski explains. “I was extremely overweight, and before I got any major health problems, I wanted to get the weight off. I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but I didn’t want to develop diabetes or have both of my knees replaced like my sister, and she’s seven years younger than I am.”
Karen says she had no problem with weight loss; keeping it off, however, was the problem. “I’ve tried every diet there was,” Karen confides. “You name it, I’ve been on it. I’ve been on everything, and I would yo-yo. I would get to a plateau, and I would just quit. Then I would get disgusted and I would start eating again.”
Karen finally decided that dieting was not the right option for her. After a doctor recommended that her sister try LAP-BAND surgery, Karen began to investigate the procedure for herself. “I went to one of Dr. Beltre’s seminars and it was exactly what I was looking for,” Karen recalls. “They told you what all of the weight loss procedures were—the difference between the gastric bypass and the LAP-BAND. They told us that the band was reversible and that the weight loss was slower but steadier than the bypass.” After the seminar, Karen scheduled a consultation with Dr. Beltre to discuss her options. “I went in to Dr. Beltre’s office, and we had a nice long talk. I felt that he knew what he was doing, and I was very confident with him. My husband went through all of this with me, and he was very impressed. We both decided that the LAP-BAND was what I needed.”
After losing 55 pounds, Karen says she is thrilled to have kept the weight off, and notes that the experience has been life-changing. “I’ve got another ten to fifteen to lose before I hit my goal,” Karen acknowledges, “but I have felt fantastic! I’ve had to get some new clothes. I’ve yo-yoed so many years of my life; I had clothes from size twelve to probably size 2Xs. Since I’ve lost the weight, I have gotten rid of all of my big clothes. I’m not going back up there. It feels good.”
Both my husband and I were very impressed with Dr. Beltre as a doctor, and his staff. It’s a great program. For people who really need this, it’s a fantastic way to lose weight.”
